Art 1 Final Portfolio

1) Which project was your favorite or most successful this semester? Please explain.

My favorite or most successful art project this semester would probably have to be the chalk murals. Though it was still warm outside, being outside while doing the project was a good change of environment, and really helped spark new ideas and creativity. It was a lot more fun getting to do this than have to sketch it out on paper. I also feel chalk really helped add different values and texture to the mural that wouldn't have been able to come through on just paper. It also really helped show the importance of shading and blending colors to help add depth to the mural. A new twist to work in groups to complete the project  was also added to this project, which in the end really helped the mural because of how everyone had different styles of art and how the piece should be executed. The last thing that made it my favorite would probably have to be it's location. Since its in the middle of the courtyard, many other students are able to see it and perhaps be inspired to make art of their own. Overall, this project was really fun and a new twist to using values and texture, and I feel that's what made it my favorite.

2) Regardless of whether you liked or disliked a project, which one did you learn, grow, or developed most from? Please explain.

Regardless to whether I liked or disliked this project, I felt I grew the most from the game drawing piece. I feel it incorporated many different techniques into one project, thus making it the one I feel I learned the most from. Not only did it go over the importance of shading/blending, it also added the new idea of perspective and highlights/shadows. It was also a good review of how using water colors can help add a really light wash to something, and how that helps when you start adding colored pencil afterwards. And also not to use too much water or you'll rip right through the page. Putting all of that together to make one piece was really helped understand how all of these different aspects of art really came together and made a final piece. Overall, this piece, with it's many different techniques being used, was the one I felt I grew the most from because of how you had to put them all together to make a final piece. It helped me develop the skills previously learned and learn how to execute them in new and different ways.

3) Choose one piece of art that you used skills and techniques learned from previous projects. Discuss your growth as an artist and how you incorporated these skills and techniques to create the piece.

I picked the value portrait for this question for many reasons. This project took many skills from the topic taught before, and put them together in a way that made it turn out surprisingly well. The blending and shading was the main skill used in this project, but it was the most important as well. Without the blending and shading, this project would have turned out looking flat and very two dimensional. But with the shading/ blending, I feel this is one of the best pieces I did. I incorporated the skills to help add highlights to the most important parts of the head, and shaded in the less important areas to not attract as much focus. This project really helped me grow from only doing two dimensional sketches, to adding depth and value to it to make it seem much more realistic.
4) Which project do you feel was the least important in learning the concepts taught in this course? Please explain.

I feel as though the print-making project was the least important to learning the concepts being taught in this course. I feel like there could have been other ways to teach the importance of texture in a different way besides doing the prints. They were messy and overall didn't turn out as well as I thought. They were a neat idea, but  just don't feel they were very successful. It was also very troublesome to have to wash off your tile without a sink. I think this project might have worked better if we were in a classroom equipped with the right appliances to do the job. Overall, this was a good idea for a project, but I don't think that it turned out the way many people wanted it to. So that's why it wasn't exactly my favorite.

5.  Choose a piece of artwork where the subject matter reflects you as an artist; one that you have a personal connection to. Please explain your choice.

Personally, I liked the spray painted stencil to describe my art. I'm very into street artists, and how they can make all these different pieces using only spray paint. I also really like the idea of people's art being on display without people really knowing about it. It's kind of like having a secret identity, but still being able to share your ideas without people knowing who you are to ridicule you about it. If I continue in art, I would definitely want to do more projects like this. A lot of the time because they usually always turn out looking really cool, so you don't really have to worry so much while making it. Next time however, I won't add as much as a flashy background so you can actually see what's being spray painted. So if I did have to choose a art piece to describe my art, it would be this piece.
